TYPES OF INTERIOR DOORS

What internal doors to choose? A guide to types of doors and their applications

It is worth paying attention to many factors that can influence their functionality and appearance. Below we present a detailed guide that will help you choose the right doors for your home.

1. Types of internal doors

Hinged doors

The most common internal doors are hinged doors, which open outwards or inwards to the room. We can choose left doors or right doors, depending on the opening direction. It is worth considering where the edge of the door leaf will be and how it will affect the arrangement of furniture in the room. The width of the door is also important, especially in narrow spaces, such as corridors.

Sliding doors

For people who want to save more space, sliding doors hidden in the wall can be an ideal solution. This type of door takes up less space than traditional hinged doors. Installed on runners, they can be hidden in the wall or slide on the wall, making them almost invisible when open. Built-in sliding doors are also popular, as they do not require structural alterations to the walls.

Folding doors

If you care about functionality while also limiting space, folding doors can be a great choice. Because this type of door “folds” in half, it takes up even less space than sliding doors. Folding doors are an excellent solution for wardrobe doors or in small interiors, such as bathroom doors.

Swinging/Pivot doors

A unique but interesting solution is swinging doors, which can open in both directions, similar to doors in restaurants. This type of door can be made from various materials, and their plane of opening facilitates passing from one room to another without needing to use hands.

2. Materials and filling of internal doors

Wooden doors

The classic choice is doors made of wood, which suit almost any interior. Solid wood used for door production is characterized by durability and elegance. Wooden doors can be mortise-fitted or flush, and are also available in various color variants.

Board doors

Board doors, made from materials such as MDF or HDF boards, although often cheaper and lighter, have many significant disadvantages compared to solid wooden doors. Their construction, based on a honeycomb filling, indeed provides lightness, but at the expense of durability. These doors are significantly more susceptible to damage, such as dents or cracks, especially in heavily used areas. Their resistance to daily movement is much lower, which can lead to quick wear.

Additionally, low moisture resistance makes board doors completely unsuitable for rooms such as bathrooms or kitchens. Under the influence of humidity, they can swell, deform, and in extreme cases – delaminate. Choosing such doors may result in the need for frequent repairs or replacement, which questions their cost-effectiveness in the long run. For those who value quality and durability, solid wood doors remain a significantly better choice.

Veneered doors

Veneered doors, covered with a thin layer of natural wood – veneer. Their functionality and durability leave much to be desired compared to stronger solutions, such as doors covered with a cladding.

Veneer, due to its very thin layer (usually 0.2–0.6 mm), is a material susceptible to mechanical damage. Scratches, chips, or surface wear are common problems that occur during daily use of such doors. Furthermore, their low moisture resistance makes them unsuitable for rooms such as kitchens or bathrooms. In contact with moisture, veneer can swell, deform, or even peel off, which significantly reduces the aesthetics and durability of the product.

Renovating veneered doors is also highly limited – the thin layer of wood prevents multiple surface renewals. As a result, these doors often require early replacement, which quickly nullifies their apparent cost-effectiveness.

Cladding doors – a better choice

However, in our offer, we go a step further. Instead of standard veneer, we use cladding – a layer of wood with a much greater thickness – from 1 to 3 mm. Cladding provides higher durability, greater resistance to damage, and better protection against moisture. These doors maintain their aesthetic value for many years, even in intensely used spaces.

Furthermore, cladding doors allow for multiple renovations, making them an investment for many years. A thicker layer of wood also allows for the achievement of a more pronounced texture and depth of color, which emphasizes their luxurious character and makes them perfectly suited for the needs of demanding premium clients.

4. Glass or solid?

When deciding whether to choose solid doors or glass doors, it is worth thinking about the functionality of the rooms. Glass doors are ideal for room doors, living rooms, or kitchens, where we want to introduce more light. Conversely, solid doors are better suited as bedroom doors or bedroom doors, where maintaining privacy is important. Glass doors are also an interesting option, as they give the interior a modern character and work well in offices or lofts.

5. Installation and choosing the right doors

When choosing internal doors, not only the appearance, but also the method of installation is key. Door installation should be done by professionals, especially if we choose sliding doors hidden in the wall or flush doors, where precision is necessary. It is also worth choosing the appropriate door jamb and paying attention to the direction of door opening. Right doors open clockwise, and left doors in the opposite direction. This is particularly important when we plan furniture placement.

6. Color and style of doors

Finally, it is worth mentioning aesthetics. The color of the doors should complement the entire interior design. A popular choice is white doors, which suit many styles and optically enlarge the space. In modern interiors, flush doors in shades of gray or dark colors look great. It is important that the appearance of the door harmonizes with the rest of the decor, and its style – with the functionality of the room.

Summary:

Choosing the right type of internal doors is a decision that will affect the look and functionality of your home. Regardless of whether you opt for mortise-fitted, flush, folding, or sliding doors, remember to match them appropriately to the style and function of the room. Wooden doors, board doors, or those with glass – each of these choices can bring something special to your interior, provided they are well-suited to the space and lifestyle.
