What is English wainscoting?

English wainscoting is a wall panel made of wood, MDF, or a combination of these two materials. Modern English wainscoting is installed on a wall from the floor up to a specific height, most often up to halfway. Its presence guarantees not only aesthetic appearance but also wall protection, sound, and thermal insulation.

Thanks to a rich range of patterns and finishes, everyone can find the right wainscoting that perfectly fits the character of the interior. 

It serves decorative functions because it raises the aesthetic value of the room. Additionally, it warms the interior, insulates, and most importantly, protects walls from damage and permanent dirt.

It is especially useful in cases of dirt caused by small children, especially those who are just beginning to walk. As we know, walls get the dirtiest up to the height where we have contacts. Wainscoting can be easily washed, so frequent re-painting of walls is not necessary. 

Old-style wainscoting doesn’t appeal to us much, because it usually made the room look smaller and darker. During renovations, we got rid of wainscoting. 

Modern English wainscoting, which is currently fashionable, is made differently. Primarily, it differs in that it is not mounted from ceiling to floor in the whole room, but only on one or two walls. This significantly improves the visual effect; the room does not overwhelm us. We focus on other patterns and colors, so the interior looks beautiful and aesthetic.

From what can we make modern English wainscoting?

Due to the fact that English wainscoting is becoming more and more popular in Poland, more and more types, patterns, and colors are appearing.

The most popular and durable is wooden English wainscoting – we can renew it easily. An alternative is wainscoting with a wooden frame and painted MDF – which also gives us an interesting effect. 

Traditionally, it was made from dark wood, such as oak or walnut, but in a modern interpretation, experiments have begun with various types of wood and colors, which allows tailoring the wainscoting to individual preferences and interior design style.

For what rooms is wainscoting suitable?

By using English wainscoting, we are able to give our interiors a unique style and character. Regardless of whether our apartment is classic or modern , it will certainly be an ideal decoration for the walls.

It is most often used in living rooms, hallways, studies, bathrooms, or on stairwells. Recently, we can often find wainscoting also in children’s rooms or bedrooms. It consists of a baseboard, a wall panel, and a wall molding.
