Wooden stairs enjoy extraordinary popularity, they are timeless. Undoubtedly, wood is a material that never goes out of fashion. But how to finish it? We often receive questions from clients asking what we recommend – oiled or lacquered wooden stairs? Then we show the disadvantages and advantages of both methods, which greatly facilitates making a choice.
Let’s start by saying that no floor is exposed to local abrasion as much as stairs. Therefore, it is important what we choose to protect this surface. Furthermore, stairs tend to wear down in the center of the steps, so very good quality protective means must be used. So what to choose? WOODEN STAIRS – oiled or lacquered?
The most popular material used in the production of stairs is oak. However, depending on our preferences, we can choose other types of wood that meet our visual criteria. Each of the steps shown below has a unique coloring and structure. See what we propose. Let’s make the steps only from SOLID WOOD, which guarantees them appropriate quality and, above all, durability.
Lacquer coating is an ideal protection for wooden surfaces exposed to significant wear. Undoubtedly, lacquered stairs exhibit higher mechanical resistance, as lacquer forms a hard coating. Furthermore, they are characterized by high resistance to dirt, as lacquer creates an impermeable layer on the wood, also resistant to water. In addition, they are easy to maintain daily, as they do not require special treatment. The disadvantage of lacquer is that in the case of renovating wooden stairs , it is necessary to remove the lacquered layer from the entire surface of the stairs. Renewing one element will make it stand out against the others.
It usually depends on preferences, amount of free time. If clients prefer an interior style where natural materials dominate, most furniture is oiled, and if they choose oiled floors, they will also choose oiled stairs.
It cannot be hidden that oil is a more natural choice than lacquer. But the later maintenance of the stairs will be yours, which requires a certain consistency. To summarize – it is worth knowing that we can repair oiled stairs locally – if a spot or scratch appears, we can repair this damage ourselves – using the oil that was originally used.
It is also worth mentioning that we should sweep and vacuum wooden stairs daily. Let’s remember that wood doesn’t like water, do not wet the stairs excessively. It is best to use a damp cloth.
Sand, dust settling on the stairs can cause the destruction of the stair surface faster. Let’s use only means designed for the protection and care of wooden products. Some will be preparations for oiled wood and others for lacquered wood.
To summarize – while we can recommend oiling for surfaces that are less used by us, however, for wooden stairs – we recommend lacquer.
It is difficult to distinguish properly lacquered stairs from oiled ones, because we have at our disposal matte lacquers, which at first glance do not differ in appearance from oil. Additionally, surface products are distinguished by ever-improving quality, there is no comparison, for example, with lacquers from a few or several dozen years ago. Using lacquer gives the possibility of finishing wooden stairs in any color scheme.
