What is worth knowing about wooden furniture?

Below we present a few reasons why it is worth choosing wooden furniture. But is everything we call wooden furniture actually made of wood? Let’s start with the fact that not all furniture is made of solid planks. The products we can buy in stores are mostly veneered MDF. How can we distinguish veneer from solid wood? We admit that you need some expertise and to know what to look for. In the case of buying furniture in a store, the best solution is to ask for the furniture specifications; the information on what materials were used for production is always visible. 

Why is it worth betting on solid wood furniture? 

Wood is a durable material; terraces or ships are built from exotic wood that will survive any, even the hardest, conditions. Additionally, wooden furniture can be passed down from generation to generation, making it the most ecological solution.

Solid wood is characterized by exceptional strength; years only add charm to it. Wood is exceptionally resistant to loads, wear, or scratching. Additionally, if properly protected, it will not require any special procedures from our side. 

What properties does wood have? 

The most important property of wood is its durability, which can be increased by drying, impregnating with impregnating agents, and covering with a protective coating such as varnish or oil.

For example, oak wood exposed to the open air can survive 120 years, in enclosed rooms 200 years, and in permanently dry conditions even 1500 years. 

Resistance to dents also varies depending on the type of wood, as follows:

• very soft (e.g.: alder, poplar, willow, spruce, fir)
• soft (e.g.: birch, elm, maple, pine, larice, mahogany)
• medium hard (e.g.: sycamore, walnut, black pine)
• hard (e.g.: oak, ash, teak)
• very hard (e.g.: beech, yew, boxwood, rosewood)
• hard (e.g.: ebony, coconut)

One of the many properties of wood unknown to clients is its hygroscopicity, which is the ability to change moisture content depending on the temperature and humidity of the surrounding air. An increase in air temperature without changing its humidity causes the evaporation of water from the wood and a decrease in wood humidity. The opposite phenomenon occurs when air humidity increases, but its temperature does not change. 

Scratch resistance – wood differs in scratch resistance depending on the species. The hardest and thus scratch-resistant wood is oak wood. This is why it is the most frequently chosen wood for furniture production. Additionally, oak is also resistant to dents and scratches.

How to clean wooden furniture?

Caring for wooden furniture is relatively easy; you only need to remember a few important things. Wood does not like water, so surfaces should be wiped with a slightly damp cloth, preferably microfiber. Furthermore, it is recommended to dry the furniture thoroughly after washing.

Sudden changes in temperature are also detrimental; furniture cannot stand near heat sources (fireplace). For care, you should use specialist preparations containing waxes and oils – which protect the furniture from moisture and dirt. 

Wooden furniture – varnished ones are very easy to care for. It is enough to wipe them daily with a soft sponge or cloth with a little water. Oiled furniture – requires more complex and much more careful protection and care.

With light dirt, we can manage with a damp microfiber cloth, but heavier ones can only be removed with water and soap intended for oiled surfaces. If dirt cannot be removed, we can sand it with fine-grained sandpaper, and then cover it with fresh oil.
