Before choosing kitchen furniture, we need to determine what material our custom kitchen cabinets should be made from. How many cabinets we would like to have, what depth and height suits us (we advise that this largely depends on the height of people using the kitchen). Depending on the size of the room, preferred style, and applied modules, many interesting layouts can be achieved.
Let’s design our kitchen so that it is first and foremost comfortable to use. We should also determine what budget we have, what the furniture durability should be, what style we want to decorate the kitchen in, and what colors we prefer.
The material from which we make our kitchen should be resistant to moisture, discoloration, and mechanical damage. It is worth investing in good materials to enjoy the furniture for many years. Below we briefly explain what these mysterious abbreviations mean – MDF? plywood? veneer?
Remember that not every kitchen that the manufacturer says is wooden is actually made only of wood. Therefore, we will briefly explain what exactly we create it from. When choosing a material, we should follow our individual preferences, but it is also worth knowing the disadvantages and advantages of a given material.
CABINET BODIES:
Solid wood is wood that is entirely natural, often from one piece. Furthermore, it is made from seasoned wood with appropriate humidity. Furniture made from solid wood is characterized above all by durability. We can easily restore it, change its color, or even its shape in some cases. They will last us for decades and can be passed down through generations.
MDF is a wood-based board composed of ground wood dust and organic compounds. It is a very durable material, successfully used in the furniture industry. The board has various thicknesses, so we can make fronts, bodies, and also furniture countertops from it. We can paint MDF with paint intended for this purpose, thus achieving the appropriate color and matte or shiny finish for our furniture.
It is a material consisting of glued thin layers of wood (veneers). It can be used to create entire pieces of furniture or their elements. Plywood is made from different species of wood, most often spruce, birch, alder, and beech, or from exotic trees. Thicker plywood is used to make countertops, office furniture, cabinet or kitchen furniture interiors. Thinner plywood is especially used for finishing the back part of cabinets and furniture. The carpentry board is successfully used in the production of high-quality furniture fronts. Their surface can be improved, for example, by veneering.
It is a thin sheet of wood – a veneer, which is usually applied to plywood. The thickness is usually around 1.5-3mm; sometimes we can find entire pieces of furniture covered only in veneer. We most often use oak veneer with a thickness of 3mm, produced from the highest quality seasoned raw material, dried in a dryer, knot-free.
What we choose largely depends on current fashion. Currently popular are subway tiles and, as always, fashionable kitchen tiles in various patterns. Let’s choose something that not only protects the wall from dirt, but which is also a decoration for the whole interior. We can also opt for glass panels, stone, brick, tile, concrete, or sheet metal. Regardless of what we choose, it is worth paying attention to the surface so that it is as smooth as possible – which will make cleaning easier.
Currently, there is a trend for modern kitchen cabinets up to the ceiling (Fig. 1). Given that we have more and more kitchen gadgets and appliances, every free shelf comes in handy. Furthermore, in this way, we will utilize unused space in the kitchen. Additional cabinets will be used for storing items that we use less often. Moreover, it looks very aesthetic and is additionally practical. So it is worth betting on this solution. Kitchen cabinets up to the ceiling are also a great idea in small kitchens where storage space is limited.

If the ventilation opening is exactly where we plan to install a cabinet, we can install an aesthetically pleasing grille (Fig. 1). Undoubtedly, we must pay attention to this when installing kitchen cabinets up to the ceiling.
Air circulation is very important, and above all, the supply of fresh air. Especially in the kitchen, because it is a room where a lot of steam is produced when cooking, so it is exposed to temperature and humidity variations.
Drawers are a very good solution for the kitchen, especially those made in the lower kitchen cabinets. Currently, we usually opt for wider drawers, where, besides cutlery, we can store kitchen accessories, pots, plates, spices, towels, etc. Cargo-type drawers (columns) are also trendy. This is a mechanism with bins pulled out on rails.
Cargo we can install both under the countertop in standing cabinets, and in cabinets from floor to the top part of the furniture. To summarize – cargo baskets are solutions that will be ideal for increasing the ergonomics of narrow and non-standard spaces because it is not only a fashion, but above all a greater convenience of using the kitchen.
The choice of handles is really big, both in terms of shapes and colors. Therefore, with their help, the final appearance of our furniture can be changed. Handles create a cohesive whole, emphasizing the character of the interior.
